We DO NOT USE OR CARRY Stainless Steel or externally threaded jewelry at Biolab as of May 2023.
Using threaded jewelry in fresh piercings can pose several dangers and risks. Here are some key points to consider:
Irritation and Delayed Healing: Threaded jewelry consists of a post or barbell with screw-on ends. The threading itself can cause friction and irritation to the healing piercing, potentially leading to prolonged healing times. The constant twisting motion required to attach or remove the jewelry can disrupt the delicate healing process, making it difficult for the piercing to close properly.
Increased Risk of Infection: The threads on the jewelry can harbor bacteria and other microorganisms, increasing the risk of infection. Fresh piercings are particularly susceptible to infections as they create an open wound. The presence of bacteria in the threaded jewelry can introduce additional contaminants into the piercing site when it is being screwed in or removed.
TEARING or Damage to the Piercing: The twisting motion required to attach or remove threaded jewelry can inadvertently cause trauma to the healing piercing. Excessive twisting or force can lead to tearing of the surrounding tissue or damage to the piercing itself. This can result in pain, bleeding, and potentially create complications that require medical intervention.
Difficulties in Cleaning: Proper cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the healing process of a fresh piercing. Threaded jewelry can make it challenging to clean the area effectively. The threads can trap debris, skin cells, and dried fluids, making it harder to thoroughly clean the piercing and potentially leading to bacterial buildup.
Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may have allergies or sensitivities to the materials used in threaded jewelry, such as nickel or certain metals. These allergic reactions can cause additional discomfort, redness, itching, and delay the healing process.
To ensure a safe and successful healing process, it is generally recommended to use jewelry specifically designed for fresh piercings, such as internally threaded or threadless jewelry. These types of jewelry have smooth, seamless surfaces that minimize irritation, promote healing, and reduce the risk of complications. It is always advisable to consult with a professional piercer or a healthcare provider for guidance on proper aftercare and suitable jewelry options for your specific piercing.
